About The Artist

Dr. Sara Schesser Bartra

Sara Celinda Schesser Bartra is a dynamic South Florida-based visual artist whose journey from molecular biologist to creative visionary is nothing short of inspiring. With a PhD in Molecular Biology and Microbiology from Umeå in Sweden, she dedicated over two decades to groundbreaking research before fully embracing her artistic calling. Sara’s work artfully merges the realms of science and creativity, transforming the invisible wonders of microbes and ecosystems into captivating paintings, sculptures, and immersive installations. Drawing from her rich multicultural heritage spanning South America and Europe, she explores into profound themes of interconnection, resilience, the unseen forces that nurture life, inviting viewers to explore the beauty the hidden worlds that surround us.

About the work

Dr. Sara Schesser Bartra explores the invisible worlds that shape and sustain life. Inspired by her earlier career in molecular biology and microbiology, she is now dedicated fully to the arts, translating microscopic processes into layered, visual landscapes.

Through resin, paint, sculpture, and immersive installations, she reimagines microbes, fungi, and ecosystems as luminous forms that invite curiosity and wonder. Her work highlights the interconnections between nature’s smallest building blocks and the broader environments we inhabit.

By merging scientific inspiration with artistic imagination, she aims to reveal the resilience, intelligence, and beauty of life at its most hidden scales, creating experiences that are both poetic and deeply human.

The Microbial World

“Through color and texture, my paintings unveil the secret beauty of microbes—tiny architects of life shaping our invisible worlds.”

Invisible to the naked eye, microbes form the foundation of life on Earth. They shape our atmosphere, sustain ecosystems, and live within us, guiding health and survival.

Diatoms

Diatoms are microscopic algae that live in oceans, lakes, and rivers, forming the base of many food chains and producing a large share of Earth’s oxygen. They are known for their delicate, glass-like cell walls made of silica, which come in extraordinary geometric shapes—circles, stars, ovals, and intricate patterns that look like natural jewels under the microscope.

In my artistic representation, I translate these invisible structures into tangible forms: canvases of different shapes that mimic the silhouettes of diatoms. I layer them with resin to create depth and translucency, and incorporate elements like beads and luminous colors to echo their jewel-like quality.

Oil paintings: Microbial world

This collection of oil paintings opens a window into the unseen realms that shape our lives. From "You Are Never Alone", exploring the human microbiome, to "I Cannot Live Without You", a reflection on the bacterium behind the plague and the role of microbes in history, and to visions of fungi, these works reveal microbes as both companions and threats—silent presences that connect, transform, and challenge humanity.

Mix Media paintings: Microbial Landscapes

This collection explores the hidden beauty of microbes through two distinct forms. The paintings—built with layered resin, collage, and textured elements like beads, glass, and fabric—evoke the vivid worlds of cyanobacteria, microalgae, and fungi. This collection also includes, resin Petri dishes embedded with beads and wire transform a scientific tool into an artistic object, turning microbial growth into luminous, jewel-like forms.

Installations

Discover immersive environments where science and art converge. Each installation invites you to walk through, touch, and experience hidden worlds—from microscopic landscapes to vast ecological networks—revealed in vibrant, interactive form.

The Natural World

The Natural World
This collection celebrates the beauty of life we see around us—flowers in bloom, animals in motion, and landscapes shaped by time. Through layered textures and vibrant colors, these works honor nature’s resilience and wonder.
